Pettman Cup May 2024
Published 00:22 on 31 May 2024
The Pettman Cup is run over two days with the best 3 of 4 race to count for the win. Sunday morning saw a moderate SW wind, with the race officer setting an M shape course with a running start and lots of angles to sail and a strong tide making interesting choices of upwind leg.
Race 1
Graham and Heather got away from the start (being a faster boat) but could not get away from Chris H and Don both in a Streaker who finished 1 st and 2 nd . Rob in his ILCA came a good 3 rd with Chris N 3000 finishing a close 4 th .
Race 2
The wind increased with many over powered in the gusts making hiking out muscles ache but big smiley faces. The streakers sailed very well again with Chris H 1 st , Don 2 nd and Chris N struggling to trapeze in 3rd and Lawrence in the club Pico finishing a very close 4 th .(his boat broke on the beach)
Monday
Race 3
Still windy from West, a figure of 8 course was set (no triangles this weekend), There were three new boats entered today, Andrew in his new Streaker, (nice colour), Tash sailing the club Pico and Steve and Lynda in Sylvie.
Chris got a great start closely followed by Graham and Lawrence in Muc Dhoo, with Rob very close. There was a number of minor incidents and capsizes with very close racing in still gusty conditions. One reach saw the Muc Dhoo spinnaker flying with Lawrence on the wire, flying down the leg, only to struggle with the spinny retrieval and be overtaken by Chris 1st and Rob 2 nd . Nat 18 was 3 rd with a great race from James Laser 2000 crewed by Jacob.
Race 4
Wind increasing, ominous black clouds up wind and some boats retiring exhausted but very happy. Another great race with Chris winning again (well done) Rob ILCA 2 nd and a deserved 3 rd from James and Jacob 2000, beating Graham & Lawrence into 4th place. Tash sailed very well to come 6 th in Laser Pico, good to see Sylvie fighting the elements too.
Everyone agreed it was a brilliant weekend of racing with stretching conditions and interesting courses set, with the added enjoyment of a warm shower followed by a beer of two in the clubhouse and plenty of after race banter.
Thanks as ever to all who volunteered in the race box and on the water in our safety boat, without who we could not race.
